Erica Malagon, a student at Clarke Central High in Athens, Ga., hopes to win an individual state swim title while still in high school. In her free time Malagon likes to play the cello and watch the Steelers.
  
  
Shot for the New York Times.Cadets at the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Ga. The program bases it’s structure after a U.S. Army basic training company, and cadets are trained in traditional drill, ceremony, courtesies, teamwork and military leadership.  Cadets also learn propper physical fitness, first aid, CPR, and survival skills.On the academic side, the program teaches life skills to help cadets in their future adult obligations while they work towards their GED.  Cadets who qualify are also eligible to take college courses offered by local college and technical institutions, and are paired up with a mentor to work with after their completion of the program.

Beverly Bourgois, whose vast collection of clothes spans the late 1800s through the 1980s, poses for a portrait with part of her collection from the 1940s and 1950s at the Lyndon House Art Gallery in Athens, Ga. where a selection of her collection is on display.  As the curator of the gallery went to pick up Bourgois’ hat collection for display he came across the rest of her clothes and decided to devote the majority of his gallery to her collection.

Shot for Stern MagazineMonina Klevens, a Medical Epidemiologist in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, poses for a portrait in the CDC Public Health Library and Information Center in the CDC's Tom Harkin Global Communication Center building.  Klevens recent paper released in the Journal of the American Medical Association entitled, Invasive Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infections in the United States, addresses the recent problem of Staph-related deaths in the United States.

“Now I’m just a couch potato,” said Matilda Bowie about her life.  Bowie says that she has lived at the Jeffersonville Adult Home in upstate New York since it opened but does not know how long that has been.
  
Shot for People Magazine.Al Gentry is comforted by his wife, Diane Gentry, during a moment when the stress and grief of his brother’s murder became too much for him.  Gentry is finally able to see justice after decades of fighting to bring his brother's murderer to justice, and countless rejections of his suspicions of his brother's former wife.Betty Neumar, 76, aptly nicknamed, “The Black Widow,” was arrested in Georgia for killing her fourth husband Harold Gentry.  Police now suspect her in the death of her other four husbands.

Barbara Kaughman spends much of her days sitting in her wheelchair and smoking cigarettes.  She also reads scripture which she attempts to share but has a hard time communicating.  "I don't like this chair, I like to walk," said Kaughman, although one attendent of the home says that Kaughman can really walk.
  
Mark is a homeless man from Belize who came to the United States for a better life and ended up addicted to crack and living on the streets.  He recieves some food and shelter from local missions but spends most days begging to get by.
